Crews clear most of latest I-40 rock slide in NC

COVE CREEK, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina transportation crews have removed nearly all the 600 tons of rock that fell onto Interstate 40 in North Carolina just 3 days after a mud and rock slide 8 miles away in Tennessee closed the westbound lanes of the highway.

Crews from both states hope to have I-40 westbound reopened by Monday, but they warn this weekend's rain and storms could delay the schedule. The eastbound lanes of the interstate have not been affected.

The mud slide in Tennessee happened Tuesday in Cocke County just over the state line, while the Friday rock slide in North Carolina happened around mile marker 7.

A massive rock slide on I-40 in North Carolina in October 2009 closed the interstate for 6 months.
