Charles Darwin being celebrated this week at UT

KNOXVILLE (AP) - Biologist Charles Darwin is being celebrated this week at the University of Tennessee's Knoxville campus.

The events through Thursday include a teachers' workshop, film screenings, a T-shirt design contest and several talks and lectures.

Coordinator Jessica Welch said the goal is to promote the understanding of evolution and its importance in biology. Keynote speakers will discuss Darwin's central concept of evolution by natural selection. Organizers said provocative lectures can be expected.

Annual Darwin events have been held on the campus since 1997. They are believed to be the longest running such events in the country.
