KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knoxville police Officer Joshua Smith received minor injuries early Wednesday morning when he crashed into a utility pole in his cruiser.

Police spokesman Darrell DeBusk says Officer Smith was going east on Parkside Drive at 4:30 a.m. when he caught a glimpse of what looked like someone outside a closed business.

As Smith turned to get a better look, the right front tire of his Ford Crown Victoria caught the edge of the pavement.

The cruiser was pulled down the steep slope of the ditch and into a utility pole, causing several lines to fall.

Parkside Drive was closed between Sherlake Lane and Hayfield Road so the damaged lines could be repaired.

Officer Smith was treated at Parkwest Medical Center for minor injuries and released. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
