Public meeting on proposal for Walmart and Publix near UT

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A public hearing will be held Monday night about the proposed University Commons project.

The developers plan to bring a Publix, a Walmart and other retail to the proposed site near the University of Tennessee campus.

University Commons would have 211,000 square feet of retail space between Volunteer Boulevard and Alcoa Highway.

The complex would be built on the former Fulton Bellows site, which is classified as a brownfield site. That means its reuse may be complicated by a possible hazardous substance, pollutant or contaminant.

Two weeks ago, Knoxville City Council approved rezoning the property, which changed it from light industrial to commercial.

The hearing is at the Knoxville Community Development Corp. at 901 N. Broadway at 6:00 p.m. The developers, Knoxville-based CHM, LLC, will be there.
