Knoxville developers talk about University Commons

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - New details have been released about the new Publix Super Market and Walmart planned near the UT campus. The 200,000 sq. ft. shopping center will be built on the old Fulton Bellows site, which is contaminated from years of manufacturing.

At a public meeting Monday night, developers explained how they would clean up the property and manage increased traffic to the area. The stores, including more than a dozen additional spaces for smaller shops and restaurants, will be on the second story with parking underneath. An estimated 25 percent of customers will either walk, ride their bikes or take the bus.

"That area has sat vacant now for a number of years. As we heard tonight, there is some contamination over there and this project will take care of the contamination, will provide a needed retail service and should be a benefit to the core of the city," said Knoxville Director of Redevelopment Bob Whetsel.

Developers expect 1,700 jobs to come with the construction and operation of the shopping center, which is scheduled to open in about two years.
