FAIRVIEW, Ky. (WATE) - A man is accused of attacking his wife with a meat cleaver Monday night in Whitley County during a domestic dispute.
The sheriff's office says it happened just south of Williamsburg in the Fairview community around 6:00 p.m.
They say James Privett, 27, attacked his wife, Erica Privett, with the meat cleaver, striking her in the head twice and hitting other parts of her body at least three times.
James Privett also tried to take his wife to the residence of a neighbor, Donna Cunningham. He kicked the door open and took clothing and a jacket, according to the sheriff's office.
Erica Privett was severely injured. An ambulance took her to Jellico Community Hospital. Then she was flown to UT Medical Center.
Neighbors say the couple fought frequently.
The woman the Privetts were living says the couple is no longer welcome in her home.
"This is the most bizarre case I have ever seen," said Sheriff Colan Harrell, of his 40 years in law enforcement.
James Privett is facing charges of attempted murder, second degree burglary and resisting arrest. He's being held in the Whitely County Jail on a $1 million bond. Deputies say he tried to run when they arrived at the scene.
