Traffic congestion in Smokies area discussed

PIGEON FORGE (AP) - The assistant superintendent at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park says most local residents don't believe traffic congestion is necessarily a negative.

According to The Mountain Press, Kevin Fitzgerald told a meeting of the area's transportation representatives that in a tourism-driven area like the Smokies, traffic is a positive. He said it's how traffic is dealt with that makes the difference.

The meeting was to discuss ways to handle the region's transportation issues. Traffic is heavy getting from Interstate 40 to the park through the towns of Sevierville, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.

Vicki Simms, executive director of the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce, said other areas have similar traffic issues that should be reviewed to see how the problem has been addressed elsewhere.
