Volkswagen to build distribution center in Roane County

KINGSTON (WATE) - After building a massive new factory near Chattanooga, Volkswagen plans to build a facility in Roane County.

Volkswagen is going to build a parts distribution center.

A lease agreement between the Roane County Industrial Development Board and VW Credit Inc., was filed in the county's Register of Deeds Office on Feb. 21.

The memorandum of lease describes a 400,000-square-foot parts distribution center to be built on 55 acres in the Roane Regional Business and Technology Park. That's on Industrial Park Road in Kingston.

Parts for the Volkswagen Passat will be distributed to dealers from here all throughout the Southeast, according to Carsten Krebs, director of corporate communications at Volkswagen Group of America.

The company isn't saying how many jobs the center would bring, but it's welcome news for nearby residents like Dave Groves. "I've got a lot friends that are gonna get in line and apply for jobs that's for sure," he said.

In a struggling economy, local lawmakers say Volkswagen's presence in the county is a huge step in the right direction.

Lawmakers say they've being trying to convince Volkswagen to come to Roane County for more than a year.

"It's going to be enormous. Roane County has a high unemployment rate. If you count the unemployed and those no longer looking, of course there's the rest of the country, but Roane County, Tennessee is resilient," said Rep. Julia Hurley (R- Lenior City).

The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, March 13 at noon.

Company officials are not saying when construction on the distribution center is expected to be complete.
