FRIENDSVILLE (WATE) - The Humane Society of East Tennessee is preparing to open a new no kill animal shelter on Sunday. It will be located at 548 S. Union Grove in Friendsville.

HSET founder and President Robin Granger gave 6 News a tour of the new shelter on Wednesday.

The organization has only been around for six months, and they were not planning on opening a shelter so soon.

"It sort of fell in our laps," said Granger. "We are very lucky. We got two acres next door that we are going to eventually build on, but this office became available and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to get started."

Granger wanted to make sure this was a no kill shelter. She says they will have to be selective in the animals they bring in, and she's confident they will find every animal that comes there a home.

"It's a good outlet to have because the municipal shelters have to euthanize," said Granger. "We are a good outlet for them if they get full. They can call us."

HSET got the building in February and has been working very quickly to get it ready to open. The shelter will be run by volunteers.

Even though they didn't get to pick the location, Granger feels having it in Friendsville will be beneficial.

"I think it's a good location because it's convenient to Lenoir City from one direction. It's convenient to Blount County, Knox County, Monroe County," Granger said. "It's not right on the highway so we don't have to worry about animals if they get loose."

She says they plan to house up to 35 cats and 10 dogs.

The grand opening of the shelter is Sunday, April 1 from 1:00 p.m.- 4:00 p.m. It's open to the public.
