KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The makers of sports clothing, souvenirs, and memorabilia are working on new merchandise after learning Coach Pat Summitt plans to step down as head coach of the Lady Vols Basketball team.
Retailers said that Lady Vols and Pat Summitt gear has always been very popular. With the announcement, they anticipate merchandise to fly off the shelves. Pat Summitt and the Lady Vols are no strangers when it comes to apparel and merchandise.
"Pat has always been kind of the icon of that logo. Been there since the beginning, and really built it herself nationally, the Lady Vols logo, so when people think of the Lady Vols, Pat Summitt is synonymous with them," said Jed Dance of retailer Bacon and Co.
T-shirts, cups, posters, basketballs, it's all out there. Now that Pat has stepped down, stores like Alumni Hall are preparing for additional shipments of new Pat merchandise.
"We have heard they are making a "Thanks for the Memories" tee with all of her successes, titles and whatnot on the back and locally they will print shirts as well. We hope to have them in the store before this weekend," said Lindsey Rohling, marketing director at Alumni Hall.
The designs are in the process.
We're working with the university and obviously Pat to make sure it is what she wants and the right message," said Dance.
The t-shirts could be ready as early as this weekend, April 21-22.
