KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett's wife, Allison, filed for divorce on Friday.

The filing in Knox County Chancery Court cites "irreconcilable differences."

Allison Burchett, 30, says in the complaint her husband is "guilty of such inappropriate marital conduct as will be proved at the hearing of this cause."

She also says she should be "awarded a reasonable amount of alimony, both temporary and permanent," and that Mayor Burchett should pay for her legal fees.

"Everybody knows somebody who has gone through this and it's very unfortunate," Mayor Burchett, 47, said Friday afternoon when called for a comment.

Allison Burchett released this statement Friday evening: "Divorce is always an unfortunate circumstance, especially when the parties are in the public eye. I anticipate and hope that we will be able to reach an amicable resolution of our differences. I appreciate your thoughts and prayers and ask that you please respect our privacy at this time."

The pair got married on June 17, 2008 when Tim Burchett was a state senator. then-Gov. Phil Bredesen officiated in a spur-of-the-moment ceremony at the John T. O'Connor Senior Citizen's Center.

The couple had planned to marry that September at the home of Burchett's sister, but decided to take advantage of the governor being in town.

They became separated in March.
