KINGSTON (WATE) - Congressional candidate Scottie Mayfield says his son admitted to slashing the tire of the campaign chairman for Mayfield's opponent, Congressman Chuck Fleischmann.
The incident happened Tuesday during a campaign event at the Roane County Courthouse.
Scottie Mayfield says his son, Michael, will apologize and pay for the damage.
Surveillance video allegedly shows Michael Mayfield slashing the tire of a vehicle owned by Fleischmann's campaign Chairman Tyler Threadgill.
Michael Mayfield was cited for vandalism under $500.
"The question really is, is this apology because he is sorry or because he got caught? Because as of yesterday everyone over there including his father said that they didn't do it, and they didn't know anything about it," said Fleischmann's campaign spokesman Jordan Powell.
Scottie Mayfield released a statement saying, "I want to apologize to Mr. Threadgill, Rep. Fleischmann and to the voters for this act. I am truly sorry and embarrassed. This kind of activity has no place in campaigns, and we are regretful that it happened.
