SWEETWATER (WATE) - A boat filled with local students on a field trip at The Lost Sea began taking on water, forcing them to abandon ship Monday.

The Lost Sea is a popular tourist attraction in Monroe County. It's an underground cavern with the country's largest underground lake.

A spokesperson for The Lost Sea said the parent chaperones were seated in the back of the boat near the motor, causing the boat to start taking on water.

The spokesperson said the boat was near the dock and a dry boat.

The boat driver and parents helped students onto the dry boat, some of the students jumped from one boat to the other.

The spokesperson said the students were scared and wet, but still safe and life jackets were on board each boat.
