DEL RIO (WATE) - A Cocke County toddler suffered second degree burns after falling into a pile of hot ashes on  Sunday.

The child's guardian, Patricia Steelman, told deputies they were fishing along River Road in Del Rio with friends. Steelman said the 14-month-old was playing with friends when she fell and started screaming. That's when she said she realized the child had fallen on a brush pile of ashes that was still hot, but had no flames.

She took the toddler to Newport Medical Center for treatment. Doctors said the toddler suffered second degree burns to the right hand and forearm. The child was later taken to Vanderbilt's Burn Center where she received skin grafts.
