CROSSVILLE (WATE) – Investigators in Cumberland County are looking for people who are impersonating police officers in a complicated series of phone calls and text messages. They're warning people after multiple incidents were reported in the Crossville area.
"People are calling and portraying law enforcement officers who have warrants for people's arrest. And that's not true. None of our officers are calling people's homes from cell phones and looking for people," explained Investigator Casey Cox, with the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities said some of the cell numbers where the calls come from are being answered by people who claim they work for a Crossville car dealership called Mountain Motors.
"Those numbers are in no way associated with Mountain Motors. I've never seen those numbers," said Mountain Motors GM Nathan Smith, after looking at the numbers on the crime report.
The report also reads "The city PD has been dealing with multiple complaints from people experiencing the same problems with Mountain Motors posing as law enforcement officials claiming they have arrest warrants on people."
"It's most likely an impersonator or someone trying to drag our name in the mud. We don't know," said Smith in response.
The exact motive of the fake phone calls is still unclear, but the public is asked to be cautious.
"They know enough about the people they're calling. They know who the number is for, and are trying to make contact with a loved one," said Investigator Cox.
