JOHNSON CITY (AP) - A new study values East Tennessee State University's impact on the region at more than $683 million.

The evaluation by ETSU's Bureau of Business and Economic Research looks at the total economic impact of both the university and the Medical Education Assistance Corporation - the physician practice group for the university's medical school.

Together, they create more than 5,000 jobs that pay an average of $48,000.

The study is based on the school's 2010-2011 budget.

A similar study in 2001 found ETSU's total economic impact was $328 million. That did not include the physicians group.

ETSU alone today has a $620 million impact, an increase of about 90%.

Jobs have increased by 40% over the same period, and the resulting household income increased by more than 50%.
