OAK RIDGE ( WATE ) - Folks in Oak Ridge brought their Memorial Day weekend to a close with a free concert. It was held at AK Bissell Park and featured the Oak Ridge Community Band.
Folks poured in to the park with loved ones and lawn chairs in hand trying to find the best spot for the concert.
"The concert here is always great. They do a great job. It's remembering what Memorial Day is all about and honoring it," said Diana Brown, who has been to the concert before.
"It's a very important event to remember the soldiers who have risked their lives for us," said Loretta Vanover, who was visiting from Oliver Springs.
The concert started with a moment of silence to honor those soldiers who lost their lives.
"It's a day we remember those who have fallen in our countries service," explained Kibbee Streetman, who was enjoying the concert.
The band began to play as people of all ages, many decked out in their patriotic best, listened and tapped along some with ice cream in hand.
"This is our country's heritage. We try to play a lot of music, patriotic music," explained Dale Pendley, the conductor for the Oak Ridge Community Band.
One of the main reasons many people came to the concert was for the patriotic music.
"It's an enjoyable experience and an opportunity to come out and hear patriotic music and pay tribute to the soldiers, the men and women who have fought in all the wars our country has been involved in to ensure our freedom," said Streetman.
"It's important that we all honor this day and recognize it and remember what it means to this country and recognize the people that have sacrificed for this country," Brown said.
Many say the concert was a great way to celebrate Memorial Day.
"It's just great to be here and great to be an American," said Vanover.
The outdoor concert was just one of four that the band will play this summer.
