KINGSTON (AP/WATE) - The Roane County property assessor is suspending her campaign for re-election for a week after another candidate for the job fatally shot himself at her home last week.
Teresa Kirkham said in a statement to 6 News Sunday that she was suspending all campaign activities until June 10 out of respect for the family of James T. Woods, who shot himself at her home on Thursday.
Kirkham said the tragedy has affected the entire community and was 1 of the saddest things she has ever experienced. She asked for prayers for his family.
Police have not said why the 56-year-old committed suicide. Woods was among several people running against Kirkham for the post. He was a former employee of the assessor's office.
