WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (WATE) - It took spike strips laid on the highway to stop two people Sunday night during a high speed chase on Interstate 75 near Williamsburg.
Jessie Andrew Gregory, 28, of North Charleston, S.C., and Katie Nicole Shumpert, 26, of Charleston, S.C. were taken into custody and are being held on several charges.
A Whitley County deputy says he spotted the couple's car swerving in a northbound lane of I-75 about four miles south of Williamsburg. When he attempted to stop the 2007 Honda the driver accelerated.
The deputy chased the couple for about 25 miles at speeds up to 126 mph before Kentucky State Police officers could lay down spike strips to stop the car. The car was stopped at the weigh station in Laurel County.
The Whitley County Sheriff's Office says the car Gregory had been driving had been reported stolen in Spartanburg, S.C. earlier in the day.
Gregory is charged with receiving stolen property over $10,000, two counts of wanton endangerment 1st degree, two counts of criminal mischief, speeding 26 mph over, reckless driving, fleeing and evading, and operating on a suspended license.
Shumpert is charged with receiving stolen property over $10,000.
Both are being held in the Whitley County Detention Center.
