MAYNARDVILLE (WATE) – Officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday in Union County for the completion of phase one of the State Route 33 widening project.

The $13 million project widened 4.7 miles of a two-lane roadway to five lanes, providing a center turn lane and 10-foot shoulders. It also includes a five-foot sidewalk.

"This project has improved the safety and operating conditions along the corridor and provides for the future planned growth anticipated in Union County," Tennessee Department of Transportation Commissioner John Schroer said at the ceremony.

"I am excited to bring this new section of highway to my district," said Rep. Dennis Powers (R-Jacksboro). "With the increased capacity comes improved safety. The safety of drivers within my district is of the utmost importance. I am proud to have made travel easier and safer for those commuting through my district."

Phase two of the project, which will widen 5.9 miles from Temple Acres Drive to the Knox/Union County line, is funded for construction and will be placed in a future bid letting.
