KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Book stores are finding it difficult to keep the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy of on their shelves, but they aren't the only businesses benefiting from the literary obsession.
Local adult store owners might call the series 'Fifty Shades of Gold.'
"People come in just to get the book. After they read the book they come in and get some of the stuff. People who never even thought to get in the fetish world have actually started to dive into the fetish world," said Romantic Escapades Assistant Manager Alex Phillips.
Not only are the books flying off the shelves, but adult toys are as well.
"We have a lot of women come in their 30s and 40s looking for the items in the books, as well as the books," explained Lynne Worthington, owner of the Adult Video Super Store. "We've sold so many of the books."
Worthington said one of the more popular items is a novelty featured in the first book. Before Fifty Shades, Adult Video Super Store sold only five to six pairs of that item per week. The store now sells more than 40 pairs of them.
The books alone are bringing people into local adult stores .
"Everyday we have four or five people, if not more, who have come in because of the book. That's why they've come to the store," Phillips said.
Romantic Escapades is also luring the Fifty Shades crowd through the store's web site, where items from the books can also be purchased.
"We've had to stock and restock it. We're constantly having to stock fetish because its the biggest right now that we're selling."
Many stores have special sections dedicated to Fifty Shades of Grey, complete with all the whips, cuffs, rope and blindfolds that even Christian Grey himself couldn't resist.
"It's really brought the adult toys to the forefront and made it not so taboo," said Worthington.
Owners are hoping the craze continues so their business continues to boom.
There has been talk about a Fifty Shades of Grey movie series, but no details have been officially released.
