GRAINGER COUNTY (WATE) – Two teenagers are in critical condition Thursday night after the driver lost control of the car.
A 17-year-old was driving northbound on Highway 25E near Highway 131 when he lost control of his Ford Mustang and slid through the barrier and into the south bound lane. His car was hit by a Dodge Caravan driving south leaving the Mustang in two pieces.
The driver of the Mustang is in critical condition tonight at UT Medical Center. As for the two passengers, Jordyn Parker, 18, is also in critical condition and Derek Goins, 19, is listed as injured.
The driver, Lois Hatfield, and passenger, Jason Jones, of the van, suffered minor injuries and were not transported to the hospital.
All five involved in the wreck were wearing their seatbelts.
Amanda Hayes works at the Marathon station up the road from the wreck and she said it's a dangerous stretch of highway. "There have been a lot of accidents and a lot of people killed," said Hayes. She says since they expanded 25E from two lanes to four, she's seen a lot of wrecks."It's a lot busier," said Hayes.
TDOT closed the southbound lane of 25E for about five hours while they cleared the wreck. THP is still investigating the accident to discover what caused the driver to lose control.
