FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - The Kentucky State Police is starting to replace its patrol cars, switching from Ford to Chevrolet in the process.
The Ford Crown Victoria is no longer being manufactured, and the new vehicles will be 2012 Chevrolet Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle. The agency says the car is a full-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan developed exclusively for the U.S. law enforcement market. It has a six-liter, 355-horsepower, V-8 engine.
State police recently purchased 125 vehicles - 100 in traditional gray and 25 in tan for use by the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division. They will begin to replace the agency's aging fleet of 2004-2010 model Fords.
State Police Commissioner Rodney Brewer says vehicles will be replaced as the current cars wear out beyond repair and as funding becomes available.
