GATLINBURG (WATE) - The Gatlinburg Police Department on Friday says four officers involved in a fatal shooting earlier in June will soon return to duty.

Michael Dewayne Choate, 32, was shot and killed the night of June 8 when police found him outside his home on Maples Road holding a gun.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Choate's mother notified police after he removed a pistol from his gun safe and stepped outside.

The Choate family said their son had a history of mental illness and wasn't taking his medication at the time of the shooting.

The police department released the names of the officers as:

  • Sgt. Chris Alvey - employed since 1996
  • Officer Tim Farmer - employed since 2007
  • Officer Adam Rose - employed since 1993
  • Officer Travis Williams - employed since 2006

They have all been on administrative leave since the shooting. District Attorney General James Dunn has determined that the officers followed state law and departmental policies.
