Ten Commandments display delayed at Monroe County Courthouse

Posted:

MADISONVILLE (WATE) - County Mayor Tim Yates said Monday the hanging of historical documents in the Monroe County Courthouse is postponed due to a litigation threat against the county.

The documents, which include the Ten Commandments, were scheduled to be put up Thursday morning in a special ceremony.

The ceremony has not yet been rescheduled.

The Ten Commandments display was taken off the courthouse walls in 2005. Former county Mayor J. Allan Watson removed it following a lawsuit brought by the ACLU.

The plan to display the documents again followed a new state law qualifying the Ten Commandments as a historical document that can be displayed in government buildings.
