KNOXVILLE (WATE) - No Democrats will run for the state House of Representatives 89th District seat this year because there were no qualifying candidates to replace Shelley Breeding.
The deadline passed at noon Saturday.
Breeding had filed to run for Knox County's new District 89 seat, but election officials determined that although she had been voting in Knox County, maps show her home is technically in Anderson County.
Breeding appealed the decision, but the state Supreme Court denied her petition without comment. Before that, the Tennessee Court of Appeals denied an appeal by Breeding to get her name on the ballot.
As a result, the Knox County Election Commission has transferred Breeding's voter registration and that of others on her street to Anderson County.
Affected voters have been notified by certified and regular mail and will be eligible to vote in the August 2 election in Anderson County.
