MARYVILLE (WATE) - The family of a fallen Maryville Marine is raising money to build a statue in his memory.
A fundraiser was held Saturday at the Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson dealership in Maryville.
Sgt. Michael Ferschke was killed in Iraq in August 2008. His family says they hope a statue will be a reminder of his service and sacrifice.
"So
that future generations can see it, know of him, always remember what he has
done," said Michael's mother Robin Ferschke. "I also would want him to represent what they've all done. By looking
at him and seeing his story, they're going to know and never forget what
everyone in the military has done for our country and for us."
The family says they need about $50,000 to fund the statue. If you would still like to donate, the booth will be back at the dealership on July 28 and August 4. You can also make a donation at any Suntrust bank.
