All aboard: Steam engine picking up passengers

JOHNSON CITY (AP) - East Tennessee residents have a chance to experience history next month when a steam engine pulls into town to pick up passengers.

The Johnson City Press reports a steam engine will arrive in Johnson City for the first time in 20 years on July 8. It will take passengers to Knoxville on Norfolk Southern Railroad through the 21st Century Steam excursion program.

Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society & Museum spokesman Mike Tilley said a limited number of tickets are available for the public to experience riding the rails with a steam engine.

Tilley called the rides "very rare" and said they may not be offered again. He says about 300 seats are available.
