SEVIERVILLE (WATE) - An effort is underway to overturn the aggravated assault conviction of a former Sevier County sheriff's deputy.

Mark Lipton was convicted in March and sentenced to probation in May for a run-in in Sevier County with a man riding an ATV on his property in 2009.

A New Jersey group called the National Police Defense Foundation says Lipton was wrongfully convicted. The group is offering a $5,000 reward for information to exonerate Lipton.

The foundation is also raising money to support Lipton and his family, saying Lipton is unemployed.

Lipton worked at one time for the Sevier County Sheriff's Office. He was fired from his job as a Hamblen County jailer after the incident.

You can donate to Lipton's defense fund online, by snail mail at: NPDF, Post Office Box 318, Englishtown, NJ or call 732-617-2330.
