TWRA says Luttrell man killed bear to protect parents

LUTTRELL (WATE) - A Luttrell man shot and killed a black bear on June 22 to protect his parents, according to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

A homeowner was grilling in his backyard on Tharpe Lane when the bear approached him. He scared it away, but the bear returned about 10 minutes later.

When the man saw the bear move toward his parents, who were outside gardening, he shot it.

TWRA officials say the man will not be charged for killing the bear.

Bear sightings have been on the rise in recent months in East Tennessee.

Officials are reminding people not to leave any food, garbage or bird seed outside and to clean grills after using them.

They also say you should not shoot a bear unless you're in immediate danger.
