KNOXVILLE - (WATE) Questions are being raised about the handling of campaign money during Mayor Tim Burchett's run for office back in 2010.
According to the Knoxville News-Sentinel Mayor Burchett's then wife Allison wrote checks to herself from a campaign account totaling more than $15,000. The checks were not included on financial disclosure statements.
The News-Sentinel reported the discrepancy on June 24 after an anonymous source provided copies to the paper. The checks reportedly coincide with expense statements of larger amounts than checks written to cover them.
Allison Burchett, who filed for divorce in April, told the paper her husband instructed her not to record some payments.
However, Mayor Burchett denied the accusations and said his wife was in charge of the campaign's finances.
