KNOXVILLE (AP) - State labor officials have proposed a $6,000 fine against a construction company whose employee fell into the water and drowned below a bridge project near Chattanooga.
The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued the proposed fines against Gilley Construction Inc. of Manchester in connection with the May 26 drowning of 31-year old Abimael Contreras.
Gilley Construction is a subcontractor on a project to replace a bridge on U.S. Highway 41 awarded to Britton Bridge LLC. Britton Bridge is the same company renovating the Henley Bridge in Knoxville where two workers died last year in construction accidents resulting in fines.
The newspaper said Contreras slipped into Nickajack Lake.
Gilley Construction has 30 days to appeal the proposed fines.
