POPLARVILLE, Miss. (WATE) – A man was in a Mississippi courtroom Friday as authorities prepare to return him to Tennessee on charges of murdering his former lover.
Shawn Nelson Smoot was arrested without struggle Tuesday night by the Pearl River County sheriff.
He is accused of shooting and killing his former girlfriend, Brooke Morris, in October 2011. Morris, 23, left behind a young son.
Smoot was indicted last week by a Roane County grand jury, but fled to Mississippi when he was scheduled to turn himself in for arrest.
Officials say Smoot did not fight extradition.
Pearl River County Sheriff David Allison told 6 News he had seen Smoot in the area several times since last December and received tips he was in the county again.
The sheriff said the arrest was an emotional one for him because he has known Smoot personally for years.
