KINGSTON (WATE) - Eight cooling locations are open to the public in Roane County this weekend during triple digit heat.

All the locations are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from noon-6:00 p.m.

They are:

  • Kingston - First Baptist Church at 215 N. Kentucky Street
  • East Roane - New Midway Baptist at 240 New Midway Road in Kingston
  • Blair - Fire station number one at 1911 Old Harriman Highway in Harriman
  • South Roane - Fire Department number one at 239 Lake Drive in Kingston
  • Midtown - Roane County Rescue Squad at 2735 Roane State Highway in Harriman
  • Harriman - Lee Village Baptist Church at 119 Lee Village Road
  • West Roane County - Volunteer fire department station 1 at 1303 Pumphouse Road in Rockwood
  • West Roane County - First Christian Church Rockwood at 328 W. Rockwood Street

"It's dangerous for certain segments of the population, those folks that are older and those that are really young that don't have air conditioning or a place to go to stay cool," said Roane County EMA Director Howie Rose.

One Midtown man says he's glad people finally have a free place to cool off. "To be honest with you, I think they should have been open a week ago, as hot as it's been," said Melvin Blake.

Churches are pitching in, handing out water and volunteering their space for cooling centers. "Those that are not fortunate enough to have air conditioning, it's critical that they do have somewhere to go to give the body a chance to catch up with the needs," said First Baptist Church of Kingston Administrator Jody McLoud.
