KINGSTON (WATE) – After traveling hundreds of miles, the suspect in the Roane County murder of Brooke Morris, 23, is behind bars.

Shawn Smoot was indicted last week by a Roane County grand jury but fled to Mississippi when he was scheduled to turn himself in. Smoot was arrested Tuesday night nearly 400 miles away by the Pearl River County Sheriff.

Saturday night he arrived at the Roane County Jail handcuffed and in shackles.

Brooke Morris' mother was there to witness Smoot taken into custody.

"He took the most precious thing in my life. He took Brady's mother and she loved him and he loved her. He took a sister, a granddaughter, an aunt. He took her away from all of us," said Tina Gregg, the victim's mother.

It was the first time Gregg had laid eyes on the man accused of killing her daughter.

"I knew it wouldn't be easy seeing the man who took my daughter's life, I knew that wouldn't be easy," Gregg said.

It has been eight months since Morris was shot and killed in Roane County, and it has been a long road to put the man accused of her murder behind bars.

"It is a relief and I'm sure its a relief for the family to have him in custody and he's going to face the judicial system and hopefully justice will be served," said Roane County Sheriff Jack Stockton.

For Morris' mother, Smoot's arrest is a step forward, but for in no way does it bring closure.

"We're never going to have closure, never, never, never, going to have closure but I've got to do what I've been doing which is be there for Brooke," said Gregg. "I have to stay strong and be at every court appearance and be her voice."

Now that Smoot is in custody in Roane County, Sheriff Stockton says he will be placed in an isolation cell until he is arraigned.

He's due to be arraigned on July 9.
