FARRAGUT (WATE) - A Farragut homeowner says lightning struck a 75-foot tree in his backyard three times in a couple of hours during storms Monday night.

The first strike around 8:30 p.m. splintered Don Hutcheson's tree during the first round of storms.

"I was standing in the garage and all of the sudden I heard this tremendous explosion. And my neighbor across the street had come out to get his mail, and he was about halfway back into his house and it actually took him to his knees," Hutcheson said.

When the lightning hit again minutes later, Hutcheson said it knocked out the top of the tree. Splinters landed on a neighbor's deck 150 feet away.

The third strike happened during another round of storms. Hutcheson says it proves Mother Nature is unpredictable.
