GATLINBURG (WATE) - Gatlinburg got a jump on the whole country early Wednesday morning, by holding the nation's first 4th of July parade at midnight.

Thousands of people lined the streets of Gatlinburg for the annual event.  Officials say an estimated 100,000 spectators were expected to attend.

This year's parade brought in a number of honored guests, including members of the Tuskegee Airman Association from Kentucky and Georgia who served as grand marshals.

The Gatlinburg parade has been recognized as the nation's first Independence Day celebration since 1976.

The festivities continue all day on Wednesday, culminating with a fireworks show after dusk.
