CHATTANOOGA (WATE) - A woman and her 10-year-old granddaughter were killed yesterday when strong winds flipped their pontoon boat.
Officials say it happened on Chickamauga Lake, just east of Chattanooga.
It is not clear if they died due to drowning or because of their injuries. There were 12 people on the boat at the time.
Don Godsey witnessed the incident. He said the tall waves were cresting as a storm came through the area, then he saw a fisherman rescuing 10 people.
Officials say the family was trying to return to shore before the storm hit, but they did not make it in time.
