2 heat-related deaths reported in Shelby County

MEMPHIS (AP) - Shelby County officials say the heat has contributed to two deaths earlier this week.

The county health department said Saturday that the air conditioner at the home of a 51-year-old woman broke and she began to have trouble breathing. She went to the hospital and was pronounced dead Monday.

On Thursday, a 60-year-old man was found in his home, which also did not have air conditioning. It was 95 degrees inside the man's home when he was discovered.

Both deaths were caused by complications from other health problems, but officials say heat was a contributing factor. It was the first heat-related deaths in the county this year.

There were eight heat-related deaths in the county last year and 21 a year earlier.
