KNOXVILLE (AP) - The iconic Ayres Hall at the University of Tennessee has become the first building on campus to become LEED-certified.

The 1921 structure was certified by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Building Institute. The building, 1 of the oldest on campus, reopened in January 2011 after an extensive 2-year, $23 million renovation.

UT Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek said Ayres now exemplifies the university's commitment to sustainable campus and building practices.

The building has 10 classrooms, three conference rooms and two specialized classrooms for the Department of Mathematics.
