Hiding East Tenn. inmates give up when dog brought to jail

BLOUNTVILLE (AP) - The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office says two jail inmates tried to escape. Officials say the men changed their minds when jailers said a dog was going to be let loose to find them.

The Kingsport Times-News reported a sheriff's spokesman identified the inmates as Daniel Ray Spitzer and Nathan G. Morelock.

The department said the two removed ceiling tile in their cell Sunday night and got into the ceiling. Jailers were alerted by an alarm that detects the tiles being moved, but they could not see the men in hiding.

When a police dog was brought to the cell and jailers announced it would be released into the ceiling, the men immediately spoke up and said they were coming out.

Both men now face felony escape charges.
