KINGSTON (WATE) – The suspect in a Roane County murder was not in court Monday when he was formally charged in the case.
Knoxville insurance agent Shawn Smoot, 30, is accused of first degree murder in the death of his former lover, Brooke Morris, 23.
He was captured in Mississippi after failing to turn himself in last month following an indictment by the Roane County Grand Jury.
Smoot has been a suspect since Morris was found dead of a gunshot wound on a Roane County road in October, 2011.
Attorney Walter Johnson was appointed to represent Smoot. A not guilty plea was entered on Smoot's behalf in Roane County Circuit Court.
The sheriff says Smoot has been kept in an isolated cell.
A bond hearing has been scheduled to be held on August 10. A status hearing is scheduled for November 9.
