KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A new business, specializing in gourmet popsicles, has opened in downtown Knoxville.

Pop Culture, located in the Medical Arts Building on Main Street, sells the frozen treats, which are made with fresh ingredients and, whenever possible, ingredients sourced from within the area.

The store sells popsicles in a number of fun and unusual flavors like cucumber mint, strawberry lemonade, spiced orange and honey, sweet potato and cold-brewed coffee, among others.

Owner and self-described "Chief Pop Officer" Jason Mitchell said his background is in IT and wanted to try a career that was a little more fun.

"Every time you talk to someone, they're yelling at you because something is broken," said Mitchell of working in the IT field. "Whereas this time you get to see kids, little kids, big kids, and they give you smiles, they enjoy it."

He got the idea after visiting a similar shop with his daughter in Nashville and decided to try his hand at making the treats.

"I started experimenting with them in the kitchen and then the freezer would fill up and I'd give them out to everyone at the pool," said Mitchell. "So when I moved here that's when I decided to open up the shop to provide some sort of alternative dessert. Something fun, something creative, a little bit healthier than a lot of desserts that are out there."

Pop Culture is open Mondays through Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can also find them on Facebook.
