KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Attorneys for one of the Christian-Newsom murder defendants want to make sure their client gets a retrial and are turning to the U.S. Supreme Court for help.

LeMaricus Davidson's defense team filed a motion Tuesday asking Special Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood to issue a stay in the case while they prepare a case to present to the Supreme Court.

Attorneys David Eldridge and Douglas Trant want the high court to overturn a Tennessee Supreme Court ruling vacating the decision to grant retrials.

The deadline for filing an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court is August 22.

Judge Blackwood said last month he would review testimony from the trials of Davidson and fellow defendant Letalvis Cobbins while considering new trials again.

Revelations of former Judge Richard Baumgartner's addiction to painkillers prompted Blackwood to order retrials back in December.

Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom were brutally tortured and murdered in January 2007.
