MARYVILLE (WATE) - The Maryville woman who said the state had wrongfully garnished her paychecks got some good news on Friday.
Robbin Gorman of Maryville said told 6 News' Don Dare that she first spotted the problem earlier this year. She received a notice from Target, her employer, that they would begin charging her to continue taking out her child support payments. The problem is, Gorman didn't owe any child support. Not only is she not divorced, her children still live with her at home.
After investigating the matter, state officials said a worker had transposed Gorman's social security number with another resident's. They told 6 News that making things right was a high priority for them.
On Friday, the state made good on that promise. Gorman said she received a check for $21,031 to reimburse her for the child support deductions.
Gorman's checks had been deducted by $98 every two weeks for nine years before she noticed the error. Her husband explained that her check stubs said "child", not "child support", so they didn't realize there was a problem until Target notified Robbin about the new charge.
