Knoxville tourism officials may start targeting gay tourists

NASHVILLE (WATE) - Tourism officials in Nashville are working to bring more gay and lesbian visitors to town and a similar initiative could soon be implemented in Knoxville.

Convention and visitor bureaus across the country have been targeting gay and lesbian travelers because it's a demographic that many think is underserved.

According to Community Marketing Inc., it is also a demographic that travels and spends a lot of money.

The organization said 32% of LGBT travelers earn more than six figures and that nearly two-thirds like to try out new destinations when they travel.

6 News asked officials at the Knoxville Tourism and Conventions Bureau to see if they're doing any similar type of outreach.

In a statement, President Kim Bumpas said, "The marketing initiative that the Nashville is targeting is very strategic, and as we develop our future strategies we believe this is a market segment we will focus on as well."
