CHATTANOOGA (AP) - Hamilton County used to be thought of as a nonprofit mecca in Tennessee - but not anymore.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that a decreasing amount of local money has forced hundreds of nonprofit organizations to close and others to rethink how they do business. The newspaper cited figures from the Internal Revenue Service that show the number of nonprofits in the city has dropped from around 1,800 to 960. That means Hamilton County has the fewest nonprofits among larger metropolitan counties in the state.
The findings have led officials to look at whether unity among the organizations could solve community problems more effectively.
The United Way is using a computer program to map needs and compare those areas to locations of nonprofit services.
