MARYVILLE (WATE) - A Blount County church celebrated a big milestone Sunday.

Six Mile Missionary Baptist Church celebrated its bicentennial. The church is the third oldest Baptist congregation in the county. The original founders built the first church building back in 1818.

Even though the group has moved four times since then, the history remains. Some members have been with the church for more than five decades and remember when it was just a small log cabin across the creek.

This year marks not only a big year for the church, but a big year for its pastor as well.

"It just dawned on me that in 2012, I will have been preaching 50 years. So in April of this year, I was preaching 50 years and then the church was 200 years," said Pastor Charles Murrell." That's 250 years of church history on both sides. So it worked out good."

Though Murrell has only been with the church for just a few years, he said the members of his congregation are some of the warmest and friendliest he's worked with in his long career.
