DAYTON (AP) - Historical society members are urging Rhea County leaders to consider the preservation of the historic courthouse in Dayton, where the 1925 Scopes trial was held, as the county considers building a new jail or justice center.

Tim Reed, chairman of the Rhea County Commission, told The Chattanooga Times Free Press that the county hasn't yet decided whether they need a new jail or justice center in the county.

Reed met with the Rhea County Historical and Genealogical Society members on Sunday afternoon to discuss options to preserve the original courthouse as the commission makes plans.

Built in 1891, the Rhea County Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was the site of a famous trial involving a high school science teacher named John Scopes who was accused of violating a Tennessee law prohibiting the teaching of evolution.
