MADISONVILLE (WATE) - Monroe County Sheriff Bill Bivens says after a witness in a 2006 murder recanted his story, investigators must reopen the case.
The victim, Troy Green, was first reported as a missing person on April 22, 2006 by his wife, Barbara. His vehicle was found two days later in McMinn County. On May 3, 2006 Green's body was found in rural Roane County.
John Edward Dawson, Jr. was charged with first degree murder in the case in 2010.
Sheriff Bivens says in court Friday, the witness recanted information given to Detective Pat Henry during the investigation.
"The information in question was a key factor in the case and without it brings about a renewal of the investigation," the sheriff said. "In no way do I believe that any action by Detective Pat Henry brought about the decision by the court. Detective Henry continues to hold my respect for his integrity and honesty."
The sheriff added, "To the family of Troy Green I will say I am sorry for the delay and I continue to support the facts that we have as to who killed Troy Green and we still believe that information to be correct. Our department will continue to work with other officials in the effort to bring to court the individual(s) that killed Troy Green."
